UV Curable Masks for Metal Finishing

Metal finishing operations often incorporate removable protective barriers, (masks), to protect component surfaces and cavities during processing. For years, temperature resistant tapes, waxes, and solvent or water- based coatings were the only protective masks available for processes such as grit blasting, shot peening, acid stripping, and plating. Applying these masks is very labor intensive and can be a lengthy process. Performance is not always consistent with traditional masks, which can lead to substantial losses resulting from rework and scrap.

New, removable UV masks are now available that are derived from light curable adhesive technology. Tangent’s family of UV light curable masks can be easily applied and cured (hardened) in seconds with a UV light source. A single application of the uncured liquid mask by syringe, brush, dip, or spray provides consistent protection from high impact particulate, hot acids, alkali solutions, plating, and paint. The masks are available in many viscosities to accommodate a wide variety of component configurations and applications.

Removal of most Tangent masks is accomplished by a simple peel, or a hot water dip and peel. For nickel alloy components that undergo very rigorous processing such as those associated with turbine and hot engine part assembly, Tangent offers mask materials with significantly higher adhesion and resiliency. Removal of this line of masks is best accomplished through incineration. Component heat treating processes are typically sufficient to effectively incinerate the masks, which eliminates the need for a secondary removal operation. Tangent’s masks will burn cleanly without surface residue. Incineration of the mask will not affect the metallurgy of the masked component.
